Being a Freelance Makeup Artist MUA

I created the blog Divine Maintenance because I wanted an outlet to write all my feelings down, about the growing process of becoming a Momtreprenuer. No I don’t have a husband or kids yet, but I believe in the law of attraction, speaking the things we want out of life into existence and everyday doing something positive to help you move towards that goal. I am currently a Makeup Artist doing makeup in a boutique as well as freelance. Freelance work is just like having your own business but instead of representing a brand you are your own brand and are representing yourself.

I go through a lot business wise trying to get people to take what I do seriously because of the social media makeup fads its such a popular idea. So many people aspire to be makeup artist so I feel like the word lacks some sustains in the eyes of the general public. The only thing is I’ve been doing this since I was 15 years old now 24, I’ve been in the game for sometime but just practicing my craft never really taking on clientele because of so many different fears I wouldn’t know where to start.

Everyone I talk to says the market is so saturated and that the makeup industry is so overdone at this point. I like to think about dentist because there are at least 7 dentist office on the main road that I live off of, and if those dentist thought like that they would never have gone through with their career. Every market is saturated there are over 7 billion people on this planet! So of course there will be some competition but it shouldn’t stop anyone from doing what they love. Things that can set you apart could be your location, your price, or your service.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard people complain about their hair salon because of horrible customer service, those unhappy customers can become your customers.

Ephesians 3:20 (KJV)

Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,

We like to think of networking as some abstract process, which in fact its simply just making new friends with people who are in the same business as you. Networking also doesn’t have to be about using someone for something, but the added benefit of having friends is sometimes you do nice things for each other.

My best friend is an awesome networker she didn’t even have to go to school to learn how to be good at it. It just cam naturally for her, and watching her meet new people and the perks that come so natural for her like freebies, invites to exclusive parties and shows is amazing. Being her friend is also a good plus for me because I usually get to share in the perks. When your friend is not around how do you network for yourself.

No Agenda

  1. I get rid of my agenda, usually you are tough on yourself when you set a goal when it comes to meeting new people. The thing with people is that everyone is so different you cannot force others to do what you want them to do. It would come off as annoying if you just met someone and they were trying too hard to be your friend.
  2. when you allow yourself to get rid of your agenda it makes it easier for you to be yourself. When you are yourself it allows you to be at ease in what might feel like an uncomfortable situation. When you are your natural self you allow others to like you for you and you don’t have to keep up an image that might be stressful.
  3. If you are at a networking event don’t talk about it, talk about other things. Everyone else will be talking about the same thing so you’ll stand out if you are just being in the moment and just enjoying the people around you as appose to stressing about the situation that you are in.

I recently realized that Marketing is a cycle of Cause and Effect. The more attempts at trying to get my clients to notice me, the more opportunities that open up for me to grab and make a sale. Its so simple!

Wake up Everyday and ask yourself what can I do to get someones attention and lead them to my product or service? You can use a social media platform to connect with people all over the world! You can stay local and introduce yourself to the people in your community so they know that you EXIST! Whether you choose to do it yourself or pay someone to do it for you, always remember that it takes time! I think thats the one thing I forget myself, that nothing is an overnight success. Like a song from a new artist it may take years to build an audience thats why consistency is key.

2 Corinthians 9:6 (KJV)

But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.

If you feel like you are doing all the right things, but those things are not resulting in what you thought they would. Like money, an audience, or attention here are a couple things you can do.

Keep going. It’s so weird to say but usually when we leave things to consistency there is little to worry about. Consistency gets you noticed and draws people close to you because you have shown that you can be trusted. If you can hold out until you’ve made a name for yourself in your industry and others know who you are there you can find a safety net.

Track your results. You may be trying to loose weight and looking at your self in the mirror it seems as if there at no changes. Having a strategy that you keep track of in a journal is helpful you can monitor your efforts to make sure that you are doing all you can to achieve your goal.

Find support. With today’s technology there are so many ways we can communicate with anyone in the world. You don’t always have to be in front of someone to get advice find an online community of like-minded people to talks to. Reaching out to other people in your industry will be comforting to you because they will understand a lot of the different emotions and challenges you are facing.

I always hear that its important to work hard, but it wasn’t until I was put into a position where I had to work hard that I started to think how? What exactly do I have to do to work hard especially when your efforts feel like they are not enough. Well, here are some indicators for you to help you feel like your efforts are noted.

If you are leaving your comfort zone on a regular basis then you are working hard. When you are putting yourself in uncomfortable potions you are testing your personal limit of what you can emotionally handle. It also shows that you are exhausting all your options and are trying your hardest simply because you are doing the things that are difficult for you to do.

Discipline is when you force yourself to do the things you don’t want to do, but because you are so dedicated you do it anyway. Discipline means you are working hard, and you aren’t just doing the bare minimum you are going over and beyond what you need to do. You are pushing through resistance the excuses that pop up in your mind have no effect on you.

If you are being consistent you are working hard this means you are fully committed to what you are doing and you don’t want to stop. I think of the story of the tortoise and the hare it wasn’t the faster animal that won the race it was the animal that was consistent and did not give up. If you are doing the above things in your entrepreneurship journey you are doing things right just be patient and everything will come together.

Call it being stubborn, but when you have a dream to create something with purpose and not just aim to make money. Its difficult to water down or compromise the integrity of your idea. I was recently contacted by my best friend, she was so excited about  a free business event she found on social media she signed herself up and me as well. It was exciting to think that we’d be in front of a very successful business man and having him inspire us with advice.

Well, if its too good to be true then it is, I showed up thirty minutes late to the business event and as soon as I sat down I realized this was a waste of time. After the stress of paying for parking 3 times in the wrong place my GPS lead me to, I was holding on to the hope that this business event would be worthwhile. Sadly it was worth it for about 4 out of 40 people in that room.

The meeting was a set up to prey on people who wanted to be rich not entrepreneurs. It was a deal to use a famous persons name and connections in the industry to help build  a brand or create an idea for you, for $5000. Since we were at that meeting it would cost about $2,000 and we would be able to bring a plus one for free. It was like watching an informercial, I wouldn’t say it was a scam, but the event was advertised in a misleading way.

I think its important as an entrepreneur to realize that your hard work and persistence is the only thing that will help you build what it is that you want to create. There are people who will prey on you because they know you have “a dollar and a dream” and get you to feel like they will help you when they don’t. Its important to stay focused on your success and be patient. As an entrepreneur your ultimate goal is to create magic, take an idea that is in your mind and have it come to life. Its a journey to be appreciated, although there might be a lot of ways to get rich quick there is only one way to take your idea and bring it to life and that is through faith and persistence.

cube-six-gambling-play-37524Today is the day I take full control of my life, my actions, and my destiny. We are all born with a voice inside that wants to lead us to our full potential but just like happiness it is something you have to create for yourself and by yourself. As you can see self-awareness is truly important when fate is a factor, but when do you know you are ready to take that leap of faith and just follower your destiny.

When you realize that you are in control. Its always easy to blame our parents, teachers, friends, and so many other people for why our life isn’t the way we want it to be. “My parents didn’t teach me how to manage money so I have none. ‘My friends always want to go out so I can never save money.” There are so many excuse we can come up with, as to why we can’t do something or have something. Have you ever stopped to think that you are in control of your life and what ever you want you can have. Its that simple if you want a million dollars you can go out and and get a million dollars but you need to have the discipline and hard work associated in achieving that goal. When you realize that no one other than you is in control of your own work ethic you are almost ready to risk it all.

When you feel fear but ignore it. Talk about risk taking, having a sense of fear is our bodies way of telling us to beware of the unknown and that we are about to go against our natural survival instincts. If you aren’t use to taking any risk your mind will convince you that EVERYTHING is scary! Take it from me I am the biggest “scaredy cat” in the world. I would convince myself that everything was dangerous, until I realized that I only had one life to live and I couldn’t live up to my fullest potential if I was always scared. Challenge yourself by taking more calculating risk for example if the worst that can happen is you getting your feelings hurt you really don’t have much to lose but some of your ego which I promise, you can gain back.

When your willing to sacrifice. The definition of sacrifice is when you are willing to give up, lose, or destroy something you hold in high regards that is precious to you for the sake of something else, in this case, you are passionate about. When you are willing to give up sleep, money, your job, or junk food for something you want you have just proved how committed you are to your quest and makes you a lot closer to your destination. The sense commitment that sacrifice brings about is great step because you have created purpose for yourself and purpose is the most important part of motivation in any field that will help you do things you never thought you could do. Like waking up early in the morning to get work done or getting over you anxiety to take to people you wouldn’t think twice about. When you are willing to sacrifice for what you want you have opened up a path of opportunity for yourself.
