Being a Freelance Makeup Artist MUA

pexels-photo-212236

I created the blog Divine Maintenance because I wanted an outlet to write all my feelings down, about the growing process of becoming a Momtreprenuer. No I don’t have a husband or kids yet, but I believe in the law of attraction, speaking the things we want out of life into existence and everyday doing something positive to help you move towards that goal. I am currently a Makeup Artist doing makeup in a boutique as well as freelance. Freelance work is just like having your own business but instead of representing a brand you are your own brand and are representing yourself.

I go through a lot business wise trying to get people to take what I do seriously because of the social media makeup fads its such a popular idea. So many people aspire to be makeup artist so I feel like the word lacks some sustains in the eyes of the general public. The only thing is I’ve been doing this since I was 15 years old now 24, I’ve been in the game for sometime but just practicing my craft never really taking on clientele because of so many different fears I wouldn’t know where to start.

Everyone I talk to says the market is so saturated and that the makeup industry is so overdone at this point. I like to think about dentist because there are at least 7 dentist office on the main road that I live off of, and if those dentist thought like that they would never have gone through with their career. Every market is saturated there are over 7 billion people on this planet! So of course there will be some competition but it shouldn’t stop anyone from doing what they love. Things that can set you apart could be your location, your price, or your service.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard people complain about their hair salon because of horrible customer service, those unhappy customers can become your customers.

Ephesians 3:20 (KJV)

Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,

CONFESSIONS OF A PERFECTIONIST

The first thing I learned as an entrepreneur is decisiveness. I blame it on being a scorpio! I’m the girl that sends the waitress back more than 3 times because I haven’t decided on what I want to eat, and just when I think I’ve touched every base the waiter hits me with another question that throws off my game “and would you like the soup or salad with that?”  My mind goes nuts, not knowing there were more options to pick from and at that  point you are on the spot to make another well calculated decision you will not regret.

Indecisiveness is a way of life for me, but being an entrepreneur you have to be decisive. Life is too short and time waits for no one. When I quit my job to embark on my entrepreneurship journey the Boys II Men’s  Cooley High Harmony “Its So Hard To Say GoodBye To Yesterday” song would stalk me for weeks, wake me up in the middle of the night second guessing my decision. I wanted to make sure that I was making a decision I wouldn’t regret, but I realized that I wouldn’t know whether I would regret my decision or not if I didn’t go through with it. It was the perfectionist in me, wanting to control everything and have everything make sense but I’ve learned that life never goes the way we plan, and life loves throwing curve balls so the only way to feel a sense of control without being controlling is to be open to change.

If you are a perfectionist remember that life doesn’t use people who are perfect to complete it’s missions, its the underdog the imperfect that come out on top. Life doesn’t ask for perfection society does life just ask that you try whether it be good or terrible, effort is always noted.

HOW TO NETWORK

We like to think of networking as some abstract process, which in fact its simply just making new friends with people who are in the same business as you. Networking also doesn’t have to be about using someone for something, but the added benefit of having friends is sometimes you do nice things for each other.

My best friend is an awesome networker she didn’t even have to go to school to learn how to be good at it. It just cam naturally for her, and watching her meet new people and the perks that come so natural for her like freebies, invites to exclusive parties and shows is amazing. Being her friend is also a good plus for me because I usually get to share in the perks. When your friend is not around how do you network for yourself.

No Agenda

  1. I get rid of my agenda, usually you are tough on yourself when you set a goal when it comes to meeting new people. The thing with people is that everyone is so different you cannot force others to do what you want them to do. It would come off as annoying if you just met someone and they were trying too hard to be your friend.
  2. when you allow yourself to get rid of your agenda it makes it easier for you to be yourself. When you are yourself it allows you to be at ease in what might feel like an uncomfortable situation. When you are your natural self you allow others to like you for you and you don’t have to keep up an image that might be stressful.
  3. If you are at a networking event don’t talk about it, talk about other things. Everyone else will be talking about the same thing so you’ll stand out if you are just being in the moment and just enjoying the people around you as appose to stressing about the situation that you are in.

MARKETING 101

pexels-photo-217294

I recently realized that Marketing is a cycle of Cause and Effect. The more attempts at trying to get my clients to notice me, the more opportunities that open up for me to grab and make a sale. Its so simple!

Wake up Everyday and ask yourself what can I do to get someones attention and lead them to my product or service? You can use a social media platform to connect with people all over the world! You can stay local and introduce yourself to the people in your community so they know that you EXIST! Whether you choose to do it yourself or pay someone to do it for you, always remember that it takes time! I think thats the one thing I forget myself, that nothing is an overnight success. Like a song from a new artist it may take years to build an audience thats why consistency is key.

2 Corinthians 9:6 (KJV)

But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.

LET YOUR PASSION FUEL YOU

Letting the universe do as it pleases with you is the most difficult idea your mind will ever try to grasp. Why wouldn’t you want to be in control of your future of the events in your life?

We are told that our futures our up to ourselves to create and if we are not where we want to be in life its no one else but our faults. This kind of advice may cause you to believe that you are behind in your goals, causing you to seek out options that will help you get to your goals faster.

I know I’ve written many post about patience but I truly believe in the power of patience. Its one of those classic clique like Rome wasn’t built in one day but when it stood it became one of many empires on which the sun never sets. Don’t be fooled by those get rich quick schemes passion and hard work is what fuels them and its not easy at all.

Get-rich-quick schemes are for the lazy & unambitious. Respect your dreams enough to pay the full price for them – Steve Maraboli

I KNOW WHAT I WANT TO DO WITH MY LIFE, I JUST DON’T KNOW HOW TO GET IT DONE!

If you feel like you are doing all the right things, but those things are not resulting in what you thought they would. Like money, an audience, or attention here are a couple things you can do.

Keep going. It’s so weird to say but usually when we leave things to consistency there is little to worry about. Consistency gets you noticed and draws people close to you because you have shown that you can be trusted. If you can hold out until you’ve made a name for yourself in your industry and others know who you are there you can find a safety net.

Track your results. You may be trying to loose weight and looking at your self in the mirror it seems as if there at no changes. Having a strategy that you keep track of in a journal is helpful you can monitor your efforts to make sure that you are doing all you can to achieve your goal.

Find support. With today’s technology there are so many ways we can communicate with anyone in the world. You don’t always have to be in front of someone to get advice find an online community of like-minded people to talks to. Reaching out to other people in your industry will be comforting to you because they will understand a lot of the different emotions and challenges you are facing.

WHY ITS IMPORTANT TO K.I.S.S

Have you ever been to an organizations event and expected more? I don’t know if you are like me but I’ve always expected the most. I’ve been disappointed so many times by business events because I read too much into their flyer or expected them to live up to their brands name. I’m starting to get use to it, I forget that brands are out to make money and unless a business owner is try to not make money, they won’t be giving out too much that they can barging for.

I say all this to remind you too keep things simple with your business don’t do too much when it comes to marketing. People feel comfortable with your brand when they feel they can trust you to deliver and be an expert in your field. Bright lights and fireworks are great or attracting new clients but when the excitement is over will they continue to be your customer? Focus on your loyal customers because they are the ones who choose to work with you the most.

NETWORKING HELP

NETWORKING HELP

I enjoy talking to new people, because  everyone is so unique. I think if you are not use to people its hard to walk up to stranger and network. So, I like to get lost in a a good book, sometimes  a book can give you a total new perspective on life. How might reading books help you with networking? Well, it doesn’t help you meet new people but it does open your mind to new marketing ideas which can bring more sales into your business. Also when it comes to net working it allows you to be more interesting, when speaking with someone you’ve never met before. Reading books that allow you to think differently also makes you unique. When you feel like you need help elevating your conversation skills spend sometimes alone reading a new book, that will pay off big time for you. The more you know the more you grow!

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR STUCK IN A RUT?

This morning I wanted to wake up and inspire somebody. I know I wake up somedays and feel like I am doing everything all wrong and that I should quit while I’m a head of myself. So this is for those of you who feel like your stuck in a rut and don’t know what to do.

Look to the Stars

Who are the people in your industry that are doing great at what you want to do. Sometimes its a good idea to look towards the pros and see what they are doing and recreate it adding your own twist to it. Our uniqueness is what makes us all special, so try out your creativity and see how far it will take you.

Take a Break

Sometimes your mind, body, and soul are just over worked. You’ve been trying so hard and you want to keep going but the facts of life are stronger than our will sometimes.  You need to take a break to regroup. I know it sucks, cause I hate myself for it sometimes and feel like I’m being lazy but you know what the next day I am a lot more productive and my ideas are so fresh I can’t believe it myself. Allow yourself to rest and don’t feel bad about it.

Seek Out Criticism

When I’m stuck and I feel like I’m at a dead end I get really desperate and I go to my toughest critic my MOTHER! leave it to here to tell it like it is and she makes sure it burns and stings. Believe it or not it motives me cause now I know what I am doing or not doing. What was a dead end for me is now a clear path to continue moving towards my goals. It doesn’t have to be your mother, it can be someone you trust and know has your best interest at heart of course. If you are the type of person who doesn’t like criticism of any kind I suggest that you change your mindset because your “haters” are a great source of motivation.
